Here’s what just a few of our customers are saying about us

Hyndburn, Lancashire

Hyndburn is a borough in Lancashire, England. The borough, which takes its name from the River Hyndburn, was formed in 1974 by the amalgamation of the Borough of Accrington, the Urban Districts of Church, Clayton-le-Moors, Great Harwood, Oswaldtwistle, and Rishton, plus part of the Burnley Rural District.

Hyndburn forms a large part of the so-called Accrington/Rossendale Built-Up Area, which covers the borough and aspects of the neighbouring borough of Rossendale. The Accrington/Rossendale Built-Up Area extends from Accrington to Rawtenstall and Bacup.

Fifteen years ago, the local council proposed changing the name of Hyndburn to Accrington & Districts to aid recognition of the borough by those unfamiliar with the area. Following a public consultation, the plans were stalled and, shortly after, shelved entirely.

Hyndburn is what’s known as polycentric and is located between the larger towns of Blackburn and Burnley. It’s linked to both areas by the M65 motorway and the East Lancashire railway line – not to be confused with the heritage East Lancashire Railway.

Aquascope, Great Harwood/Clayton-le-Moors

For many years, Hyndburn was home to one of the region’s largest and most popular local fish shops. Aquascope in Great Harwood supplied a huge selection of coldwater, tropical, and marine livestock. A large dry goods section and a separate showroom for tanks and cabinets completed Aquascope’s offering.

The business changed hands at least once or twice during its 50-year history. Its final owners specialised in discus, making Aquascope a go-to destination for discus lovers in Hyndburn, the wider North West, and from further afield. The store ultimately closed in 2014. Aquascope’s closure came after expansion plans that were featured on national television.

Aquascope starred in the hit Channel Four series, Bank of Dave. The Bank of Dave series followed Burnley-based businessman and Sabden local Dave Fishwick. Fishwick is the name behind Burnley Savings and Loans on Keirby Walk, Burnley. The finance and loan company is better known as the Bank of Dave or Bank on Dave. Aquascope featured on the show as its then-owner sought financing for various expansion plans.

After decades in Great Harwood, Hyndburn-based Aquascope ultimately moved 10 minutes up the road to what would become its final premises. The move involved a short hop from Quality House on Waverledge Street and Rushton Street in Great Harwood to Allied House on Burnley Road in Clayton-le-Moors, just on the outskirts of Accrington.

Quality House was formerly the home of Great Harwood’s Palace Cinema. During its history, the building also reportedly housed a skating rink, a snooker hall, and an amusement arcade before becoming Aquascope, according to various reports.

Meanwhile, and close to junction seven of the M65 motorway, Aquascope’s new Clayton-le-Moors location also became home to Coopers Critters. Coopers Critters provided educational animal encounters for nurseries, schools, birthday parties, and more. Both businesses have since shut their doors for the last time, with Coopers Critters closing two years after Aquascope in 2016.

The two businesses’ former home at Allied House on Burnley Road is now occupied by the gym, health club, and physical fitness centre, Fitness Hub. Elsewhere, Aquascope’s original home in Great Harwood on the site of the former Palace Cinema continues to play host to a variety of other local Hyndburn businesses.
