The Plymouth-based National Marine Aquarium has made Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s best aquariums.
Global media company and magazine publication Forbes has, it seems, a keen eye on the environment. That includes acknowledging the role of the Earth’s oceans in helping to regulate our planet’s climate. A recent Forbes article explained how growing interest in the welfare of our planet’s marine life and oceans has led to a surge in visits to public aquariums.
The article highlighted how, while some public aquariums focus primarily on entertainment, others play a crucial role in education, conservation, and scientific research. The best and most ethical aim to inspire ocean conservation, rehabilitate injured marine life, and support research efforts that help protect vulnerable species.
Each of these was a factor in the leading lifestyle publication’s naming of its top ten public aquariums in the world, one of which being the UK’s National Marine Aquarium, located in Plymouth.
“The largest aquarium in the UK, the National Marine Aquarium is home to over 4,000 animals and features groundbreaking ocean conservation work,” Forbes writer Joanne Shurvell explains.
Travel, food, and culture writer Joanne goes on to explain how the National Marine Aquarium is also home to the Ocean Conservation Trust, which is dedicated to connecting people with the ocean.
“There are lots of different exhibits and animals found in this harbour-front [public aquarium],” her Forbes piece continues. “One exhibit shows some of the stunning and colourful animals found locally in the rockpools around the coast,” it goes on.
“The Eddystone Reef exhibit features local sharks and stingrays,” they add, wrapping up, “while the Ocean Drifters exhibit features mesmerising jellyfish.”
