Pixar’s Finding Nemo Turns 20 Today!

Ready to feel old? Finding Nemo first hit the world’s cinemas twenty years ago today.

  • Finding Nemo was Pixar’s fifth film.
  • First shown in US cinemas on Friday, May 30th, 2003.
  • Won Best Animated Feature at the 76th Academy Awards.

Finding Nemo, the fifth smash hit movie from Pixar Animation Studios, today marks 20 years since its cinematic debut. Finding Nemo followed in the celebrated footsteps of 1995’s Toy Story, A Bug’s Life in 1998, and Monsters, Inc. in 2001. Pixar also squeezed in Toy Story 2 in 1999.

The movie marked a milestone for Pixar and other studios alike. Before Finding Nemo, water had been deemed wildly tricky to animate. But having successfully tackled insects, monsters, toys, and more in its other blockbuster films, Pixar decided to take on the challenge in spectacular fashion.

Set along Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, there’s certainly no shortage of water in Finding Nemo! Pixar nailed the animation process, and the rest, as they say, is history. Taking place between the Pacific Ocean and the Sydney dentist’s office aquarium that Nemo calls home for a time, the movie attracted rave reviews from the outset.

It was the second-highest-grossing film of 2003 and won Best Animated Feature at the 76th Academy Awards the following year. Two decades on, it remains as popular as ever, continuing to delight fans of all ages – new and old.

Finding Nemo is available to stream now on Disney+.
