A popular boozer’s aquarium has helped put it in the running for National Pub of the Year.
We’ve long touted the benefits of fish tanks in homes and businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and pubs. A source of relaxation and a fantastic talking point, pub tanks are a particular favourite of ourselves and many of our clients. And it seems the good folk at the Campaign for Real Ale agree, too.
It comes as the Horse and Jockey in Stapleford is shortlisted for CAMRA’s best pub in the UK. The organisation’s National Pub of the Year award is the highest accolade granted to the country’s watering holes. The award returns in 2022 after a two-year break caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Five decades of real ale and thriving pubs
The Campaign for Real Ale claims to be one of Europe’s most successful consumer organisations. Founded by four beer lovers over 50 years ago, it now represents around 160,000 pub-goers across the UK. CAMRA aims to have quality real ale and thriving pubs in every community.
CAMRA named Stapleford’s Horse and Jockey 2022’s best pub in the East Midlands. The Nottinghamshire establishment now goes up against just 15 other regional winners for overall Pub of the Year. Alongside the quality of their beers, pubs in the competition are judged on atmosphere, decor, inclusivity, service, and welcome.
Award-winning boozer’s fish tank
The Horse and Jockey scooped this year’s nod for the best pub in the East Midlands, thanks in no small part to its atmosphere and decor. CAMRA specifically highlighted the pub’s wood burner, comfortable seating, and attractive fish tank – a real feature in the popular Stapleford boozer.
Further praise was also lavished on the Horse and Jockey for its dog-friendly nature. In addition to being home to an array of fishy friends, the pub also welcomes punters’ pooches, with water and doggy treats provided at the bar.
Pub and aquarium firmly in the running
The overall CAMRA National Pub of the Year winner will be announced on Wednesday, the 30th of November, with Stapleford’s Horse and Jockey—and its fish tank—now firmly in the running for the top title.
Previous winners somewhat closer to home include The Swan with Two Necks in the Ribble Valley village of Pendleton between Whalley and Clitheroe. That’s alongside Rochdale’s The Baum, on Toad Lane, which scooped National Pub of the Year precisely a decade ago back in 2012.
